Best RV Step Cover Reviews

1. Camco 42925-A 18-inch RV Step Rug

I genuinely like the texture of these RV stair covers as it efficiently scrapes away at the bottom of my shoes. People only need to do a couple of shuffles over this rug, and virtually all traces of dirt are gone. It is especially true when the carpet is newly-cleaned. I can see the difference in the amount of dust that my vacuum picks up.

It is less than half of the usual amount before I got these step covers. Another thing that I liked about this product is that it is easy to install. The simple process does not require any specialized tool. Also, the cover draped over the step and held in place using a durable hook spring.

The hook springs are durable. I noticed how these hook springs could last for years without letting the step coverslip and slide it over the tread. It is a universally-fitting step cover that can fit over any RV interior steps up to 18 inches wide. You do not need to worry about getting an item that is a bit too wide for your metal steps.

You can trim off the excess materials using scissors or a sharp utility knife. Tailor those edges to make them fit your steps correctly in the center. It does not matter what brand or type of RV steps you have.

The material is also not so thick that it will prevent the steps from folding back up. It comes precisely at the right thickness.

Unfortunately, the material is not that abrasion-resistant. After a couple of months, you will see that the middle part of the rug will start to thin and eventually rip.
What We Like
  • Easy to install; no tools needed to install the travel trailer step covers properly
  • Adds a layer of safety by providing more grip to each step.
  • Perfectly fits in all RV steps
  • Easy to clean and quick to dry
  • Effectively removes most of the dirt and debris from your shoes
What We Don’t Like
  • The rug material is not that durable, as it might last only for a couple of months.
I do have a minor issue about the product, but for its price, I do not think that you can get anything better than it.

2. Prest-O-Fit 2-0420 Ruggids RV Step Rug

First of all, I like the deep tread pattern in these RV interior step covers. It can catch quite a lot of dirt and dust. Almost nothing gets into the RV the moment I started using this RV step carpet.

People also appreciate how the thick carpet feels. It can make you think and feel how premium the material is.

This cover is made specifically for straight steps. You can easily install it. Even without consulting the instructions, first-time owners can effortlessly figure out how to place it onto your RV steps. This choice for motorhome step covers come with zip ties, and everyone probably already knows how to use these things. It took me less than five minutes to open the packaging and install it.

It is also lovely that this step cover has UV protection. With that, you have an assurance that the cover will not quickly get sun damage. That also means that the colors will not fade. Speaking of the intensity, I dig the mottled gray and black pattern on this step cover.

Because of its dark color, you would not even notice if the rug is dirty yet or not. You can leave it that way for weeks without anyone noticing. Best of all, when this step cover needs a wash, there is no need to take it off the steps. Just point a hose at it, and it will knock away all of the dirt and dust trapped in the fibers.

The only thing that I did not like about these step huggers is not the step cover itself, but rather the zip ties that came with it. I noticed that these features are a bit flimsy. The two that came with the package already snapped on me while I was installing them for the first time.

Fortunately, I had a whole bag of industrial zip ties from Walmart that was

What We Like
  • Very easy to install without any special tools required
  • UV-treated to withstand the harsh rays of the sun
  • Easy to clean
  • Quick to dry
  • Mold and mildew-resistant
What We Don’t Like
  • The zip ties that came with the cover are fragile.
This product would have gotten higher marks if only the included zip ties were usable. However, it is a minor inconvenience that is easily overcome by the other benefits that this product can offer.

3. Camco RV Camper Step Rug

One impressive thing about the Camco RV Camper Step Rug is the TPE backing; the feature hailed as the most significant improvement from the previous version. The previous version just had rubberized support, but the new TPE backing made the rug more resistant to slipping and sliding.

I also like the artificial turf material of the step cover. It does an excellent job of trapping dirt and debris within the fibers. Also, unlike carpet material, the threads of this step cover are more durable and more rigid, making those more effective at scrubbing off the dirt and dust off the soles of shoes.

Just like the other RV step mats, this one is straightforward to install. However, it would help if you were sure about the size because trimming it is tricky and not that advisable. I liked that the included hook springs are strong enough to hold the cover in place, but not so strong that I could not stretch them out by hand.

Another quality of this product is that it does not absorb and retain water. It also drains out rather quickly. Such a feature means that the cover only needs a couple of minutes to dry thoroughly under the sun.

Also, because it does not retain moisture, it is naturally resistant to the growth and propagation of fungi like mold and mildew. The only thing that I did not like about this step cover is the width of the material. I would rather have the rug cover almost the entire step, but this one has a good two and a half inches exposed on each side.
What We Like
  • The artificial turf surface traps dirt effectively.
  • The rug does not absorb and retain water.
  • Naturally mold and mildew-resistant
  • Easy to install
  • Cleans up quickly using just a hose
What We Don’t Like
  • The measurements are a bit wonky and not wide enough to cover the entire step.
The minor flaw about its size cannot outshine the many benefits that this significant step cover provides.

4. Prest-O-Fit 2-0351 Outrigger RV Step Rug

The feature that most customers love about the well-made Prest-O-Fit 2-0351 Outrigger RV Step Rug is the micro-ribbed texture of the surface.

This rug has such a vast surface area (thanks to the micro-ribbing) that there is plenty of space where the dirt and dust can cling.

If you did what I did and covered all three of my RV steps with this product, the soles of your feet will not have that much dirt on them anymore by the time you step into the RV. Even though this step cover is a natural dirt and dust magnet, it is surprising that it does not retain water.

When paired with steps with numerous perforations for drainage, it will still be safe to climb on them even when it is raining outside. When the rain lets up, after a couple of minutes under the sun, the rug will already be completely dry again.

It is also pretty easy to install, and everything you need is already in the package. These RV radius step covers can fit snug both on RV steps that are 8 inches and 11 inches deep. You need to attach the hook springs on the right metal grommets properly.

I also like the different color options, like burgundy wine and charcoal that these wrap around radius RV step rugs provide. The dark, mottled pattern is quite lovely, and it also hides the dirt quite well. Even if you haven’t washed the step cover in weeks, no one will notice it because of the dark colors.

The only complaint about this product is the somewhat flimsy hook spring that gets squished quite easily. It is much better if I were to secure the rug in place using industrial strength zip ties instead, which I did, and they are still holding up rather well.
What We Like
  • The micro-ribbed texture holds a lot of dirt and debris.
  • Does not retain water and dries up quickly
  • UV-treated so it will not fade under the sun
  • Durable and resistant to abrasion
  • Easy to install and maintain
What We Don’t Like
  • The springs that came with the rug are not that strong.
The issue I have with the springs is but a minor inconvenience. It is still quite a good investment if I do say so myself.

5. Camco 42909 Wrap-around RV Step Rug

Numerous buyers love the Camco 42909 Wrap-around RV Step Rug for its ribbed surface.

The textured surface provides such a tremendous amount of surface area where dirt and debris can get trapped. It will ensure that you will not be tracking mud all over your RV. Owning the piece means having a doormat permanently attached to the doorway.

Another thing I liked about this product is the TPE lining at the back. It helps prevent the rug from sliding and bunching up. Without the help of this non-slip backing, the carpet might become a tripping hazard, especially if the steps are wet.

Furthermore, this rug dampens the noise coming from the footfalls of people climbing up and down the steps. I have a couple of kids, and it can sometimes get unbearable when they continuously run in and out of the RV. Thanks to this rug, I no longer have to deal with the sounds of shoes pounding on sheet metal.

It is also nice that this step cover is easy to clean. I need to point a garden hose at it, and it will be enough to knock away almost all of the captured dirt and debris in the synthetic fibers. Additionally, people do not have to worry about drying. This rug does not retain water, so it will dry up in minutes when exposed to sunlight.

I have no complaints about the step cover itself. However, I would like to point out that the spring hooks are not as robust as I would have wanted them to be. They are strong enough to hold the step cover in place, but in my opinion, they do not hold tight enough.
What We Like
  • Has more than enough surface area to hold a lot of dirt
  • Easy to install and remove when needed
  • Low-maintenance
  • Comes in dark colors, so you will not even notice if it is dirty
  • Helps dampen the noises made by footsteps on the stairs
What We Don’t Like
  • The included spring hooks are not strong enough.
Although I have a bit of an issue regarding the springs, it is just a minor thing compared to the neat benefits I got from the step cover. It is truly a good investment.

6. Prest-O-Fit 2-0051 RV Step Rug

One thing that delights me about the Prest-O-Fit 2-0051 Jumbo Wraparound RV Step Rug step cover is how thick and soft it is to the feet. You can feel it through your shoes just how delicate this rug is beneath our feet. This feeling gets even better when you wear flip-flops.

I also liked this step cover because it is handy at scraping off the dirt and dust from the bottom of my shoes. From the moment you start using this step rug, you do not have to vacuum inside the RV as often as before. Best of all, when I do vacuum, I pick up considerably less dirt.

Old buyers suggest getting enough of these rugs to cover all the steps for increased cleaning efficiency. If you like traveling with your dogs, you will love to utilize these rugs as well. Our dog used to have a hard time getting up the RV steps because his claws are also getting snagged on the perforations. It is no longer the case after I installed the rugs on all our steps. Hence, the place can become our dog’s favorite spot.

Speaking of installation, I could not stress enough how easy it was to install these motorhome chrome step covers. It just took me five minutes (maybe even less) per step.

Thanks to the nicely-sized grommets and the spring hooks, setting up these steps was a breeze. One reminder, though, you should carefully measure your steps beforehand so you can get the perfect fitting cover for them.

Beyond that, the color on this rug might not be everyone’s cup of tea. You might not like the mottled pigmentation with the white bits here and there. It would be much better if these step covers came in just one solid color.
What We Like
  • Easy installation process
  • Thick and soft feel
  • Pet-friendly, making it possible for your pet to climb up and down the steps easily
  • Effectively cleans the soles of shoes
  • Low-maintenance and easy to clean
What We Don’t Like
  • Not a big fan of the color options
The bottom line is that people love this product and would highly recommend it to other RV owners.

7. Camco 42947 RV Step Rug

My favorite feature of the Camco 42947 RV Step Rug is its artificial turf covering.

The product is stiff enough to scrape off the dirt from the soles of your feet while also remaining soft that you can comfortably walk over the steps barefoot. Even my dog loves to lie on top of the steps – that is how comfy it is.

Another nice feature of this product is how easy it is to install. You do not need to use any tools at all. It would help if you used your hands. The rug is held in place by spring hooks, providing just enough tension to prevent the carpet from slipping and sliding over the steps.

I managed to install mine in just five minutes, granted it was the perfect size for my steps. People also like how easy to clean this rug is. When it is dry outside, I give it a couple of passes with a vacuum, and it is done.

For even more in-depth cleaning, I point my garden hose at the steps, and all of the dirt and debris trapped within the artificial turf style washes right off.

Besides, since this rug is made of synthetic fiber, it does not absorb and retain water. If your RV steps have perforations in them, it will allow the water to drain off completely. Thanks to such a feature, your rug will be dry in just minutes.

Also, because this rug is almost always dry, it is naturally resistant to mold and mildew. The only problem that I experienced with this product is that it is a bit too thick. It is so thick that I have to force my RV steps to fold completely, which I used to be able to do using one hand.
What We Like
  • Made of artificial turf, which is durable and yet still soft
  • Has a non-slip TPE backing
  • Easy to install as it will probably take just five minutes
  • Does not retain water, allowing it to dry in just minutes
  • Highly resistant to mold and mildew growth
What We Don’t Like
  • A bit too thick, interfering a bit with the folding mechanism
Even though it is a bit hard to close the steps now, the benefits these step covers provide are well worth it.

8. Shade Pro RV Step Cover

If you prize excellent and beautiful design, the Shade Pro RV Step Cover is among the best picks available. Some might find the traditional striped pattern tacky, but most users find it incredibly charming.

Another nice feature of this product is that it is trim to fit. Don’t worry if it seems that the rug is a bit too wide for your steps. Individuals can tailor both sides to make it fit their steps correctly. It is great because some people prefer their rug not to reach to the edges of the steps. Others, on the other hand, like their steps fully covered.

It is also effortless to install. Once you have it trimmed down to the right size, you need to drape it over the steps then use the included spring hooks to secure the cover over the steps. The whole process would probably not take you more than five minutes to finish.

The surface of the cover is filled to the edge with tiny fiber loops. It can effectively trap dirt and debris from the soles of your shoes. I used to have just one rug at the base of my RV door, and it did not do much. Now that I have step covers on all treads, very trace amounts of dirt ever make their way into the RV.

I do have one tiny complaint, though, and it is about the springs that came with the kit. My steps are around 10 inches deep, and when I first tried to install the rugs, I had to pull on the springs to get them to reach the grommet on the other side.
What We Like
  • Has a charming and old-fashioned design
  • Can be trimmed to fit
  • Easy to install
  • Thick and soft material
  • Catches dirt and dust very effectively
What We Don’t Like
  • The springs are a bit too short for some steps.
The issue with the springs is more like a minor inconvenience. This rug is worth a whole lot more than what its price implies.

9. Aucuda RV Step Cover

In my opinion, the best thing about the Aucuda RV Step Cover is that it is very pet-friendly. With that benefit, your pet’s claws will not get caught in the holes in the steps. When I laid down the step rugs on my RV steps, our dog no longer had any problem climbing up and down.

This product also has a rather thick and durable PVC backing. This rubberized backing adds durability to the entire rug, but the feature prevents it from sliding on the steps. As a result, we have a safer stair to walk on because it dramatically reduces the chances of slipping or tripping.

I also like how it serves as a padding for the hard edges. I have hit my shins numerous times on my RV steps, and most of the time, it broke the skin, causing a bit of bleeding. Thanks to this step cover, the edges are no longer as dangerous and painful as they once were.

The carpet texture on the surface of the rug also traps dirt and debris reasonably well. It serves as a doormat that you need. Moreover, the piece is effective in keeping the inside of your RV clean when you cover all of the steps.

The only problem I have with this rug is that it does not dry quite as quickly as the other ones that I have tried. When I wash them, I also need to take them off the steps and hang them out to dry.
What We Like
  • Pet-friendly
  • Comes with a thick and durable PVC non-slip backing
  • Acts as a padding for the steps
  • Traps dirt and debris rather well
  • Easy to clean
What We Don’t Like
  • Does not dry quite as fast as the others
Although I have to hang this product out to dry, these stair tread covers provide more than enough benefits that make me forget about that tiny inconvenience.

10. Grubby Feet RV Step Cover

I genuinely like how nearly every square inch of the Grubby Feet RV Step Cover is full of tiny loop stitches. This textured surface acts like a brush that scrubs the entire surface of your soles to get rid of dirt and dust. It will prevent you and your companions from tracking dirt and even mud all over your RV.

As being made of PVC, it is naturally water-resistant. Such material ensures that the rug will not absorb nor retain rainwater. You can leave it outside in the rain without worrying about it getting damaged at all. Apart from that, the product will not become a breeding ground for mold and mildew.

It is exciting to know that this carpet does not require a complicated cleaning process. It is so easy that you do not even need to remove the carpet from the steps. You need to point your garden hose at the rug and let it rip. The water will be more than enough to wash away all of the dirt inside the piece. However, if you want an even deeper clean sometimes, get a brush and lightly scrub the whole area.

Regarding the installation task, it does not require much time nor skill from users. Notably, the carpet features necessary zip ties to attach itself onto the step. All-in-all, I had to install three of these covers, and I only spent less than fifteen minutes in total.

The only weakness of this product that bothers some buyers is its thinness. If you hit your shin on the edge of the step, it will still sting quite often. In short, it does not have enough padding.
What We Like
  • The entire surface is covered with loop stitching.
  • Catches a lot of dirt and dust from the soles of feet
  • Very water-resistant and dries quickly
  • Easy to clean and very low-maintenance
  • Installs in just five minutes or less
What We Don’t Like
  • A bit thin
Although this rug is not as thick or padded as I would have liked, it is still the right product that delivers on all its promises.

11. Safety Step SA11-00 Sand Away Step Rug

I like camping in the desert, but I would also prefer it if the sand would stay outside of my RV as it has been quite a dilemma for me for such a long time. However, since I started using the Safety Step SA11-00 Sand Away Step Rug, the amount of sand that gets into the RV has significantly dropped.

The loops on the surface of the rug catch almost all of the desert sand. These features can also prevent them from getting inside the RV. Aside from acting like a doormat, this rug made my RV steps a lot safer to walk on. Before I had this rug, my RV’s stair surfaces would turn into slippery death traps, even with the no-slip tape, whenever it rains.

Thanks to this rug, my steps are always safe to walk on, rain, or shine. Speaking of rain-absorbent function, unlike other doormats that you have to hang out to dry after it rains, this one will dry up. This rug is made of non-porous materials, meaning any water poured over it will just run right off the edge.

Also, because it does not retain any water, you can stop worrying about mold and mildew. In fact, you can fold up your RV steps while the rug is still a bit wet. However, to be on the safe side, you should always dry the carpet first.

I do have a problem with the springs that are supposed to hold this rug in place. It is because the springs are not strong enough. The wires used for making the springs are flimsy, which is why I replaced them as soon as I can with stiffer springs.
What We Like
  • Works well to brush your shoes
  • Prevents dirt and sand from getting into your RV
  • Makes your steps extra safe
  • Does not retain water
  • Dries up quickly
What We Don’t Like
  • The springs are a bit flimsy.
If not for the less than acceptable springs, this product would have gotten full marks. However, that does not mean you will not be getting a top-notch product.

12. Prest-O-Fit 2-0374 Outrigger Radius RV Step Rug

Finding RV step covers that can perfectly fit on curved steps can be difficult, but the Prest-O-Fit 2-0374 Outrigger Radius RV Step Rug is almost the perfect shape and size.

When I finished installing this rug on my RV steps, there were no materials gathering, and it was perfectly centered. It almost looked like it came standard with the RV.

The micro-ribbed texture of the surface of the rug provided a high rough surface that brushes off any dirt and dust from shoes. Users no longer needed to vacuum inside the RV quite as often after they started using this rug.

For inexperienced users, the installation is also quite easy. The kit already came with the spring hooks that will hold the step cover in place. Usually, it took us just a couple of minutes to install the cover without the help of any specialized tool.

The manufacturer intends to boost the product’s durability by using UV-treated materials. Therefore, prolonged hours under the bright summer sun for hours cannot negatively affect the piece. Such a function comes in handy when we go camping in nature; the colors on these carpets will not fade quickly.

The only complaint that I have is about the vinyl backing. It seemed thin for my tastes. I have only been using mine for a couple of months, and so far, it is still holding up.
What We Like
  • Perfectly fits over curved steps
  • The micro-ribbed surface cleans soles effectively.
  • Keeps dirt and dust outside the RV
  • Easy to install
  • UV-treated to prevent fading under the sun
What We Don’t Like
  • The vinyl backing is a bit thin.

This product is as good as it can get when it comes to RV step covers curved. If you have curved RV steps, I suggest that you get this product.

Best RV Step Covers Buying Guide

rv-step-rugs

Step covers come in many different varieties, sizes, and types. To make sure that you will only be getting the one that fits your particular needs, here are some of the factors you need to consider while browsing through your many choices.

Size of the cover – As much as possible, the RV step cover you get should cover the entire step, and not leave any space that could, in the long run, collect dirt and other debris. The piece should not also extend past the edge of the step, or slip and slide over the tread.

It is because it can turn into a tripping hazard, which is the exact opposite of the reason why you want to buy a step cover. Because the size of the treads is not standard, you need to measure the ones on your RV steps before you go shopping for rugs.

Check the step cover dimensions beforehand and compare them with the measurements of your steps to make sure that it fits them well.

Color of the cover – As much as possible, get step covers with neutral, dark colors. Dark step covers can capture dust and dirt, but they will not look dirty. It is why you do not usually see step covers or mats with light colors.

You can also choose step covers that come with striking patterns to make them more visible and for aesthetic purposes. Patterns make it easy for people to go in and out of the RV to see the steps and not trip over them.

Ease of installation – RV step covers are not just slipped over the treads. These covers need to have a secure attachment method so that they would not slide around, causing severe accidents. Secure the sheets on the steps so that they will not get blown off when you drive your RV down the road.

The covers should also be easy enough to install and, eventually, remove for cleaning. Ideally, there should be no need to use any kind of tool to fasten the cover over the steps. However, the fasteners should at least be strong enough to keep the sheets in place.

Some brands claim that their step covers already have a rough or sticky backing that can keep them in place. However, it is still best to get one with additional options for spring hooks or zip ties. If you are getting step covers secured in place using zip ties, make sure to get ones with the ties already included.

Materials used – The material/s used for making the step cover will undoubtedly affect how it performs. The most common materials used for making step covers nowadays are polyester, plastic/PVC, and vulcanized rubber.

The plastic or PVC step covers are the most affordable of the bunch, but surprisingly, rubber and polyester covers are the most common in the market. When it comes to scraping off the mud and dirt off your shoes’ soles, polyester is the most effective.

However, the downside is that polyester step covers should always be kept dry because the material is prone to getting mildew and mold. Plastic and rubber step covers, on the other hand, are resistant to the growth of mold and mildew.

However, these materials are also very slippery when wet. It is why they are not quite popular with people who live or like to camp in snow-covered places where the rain is continuously pouring.

Your budget – Some brands of RV step covers are available at over $100 a piece. The good news is that you can also find those that are quite cheap, but comparable in performance to the more expensive ones.

However, it is essential to point out that you always get what you paid for when it comes to step covers. With that in mind, avoid the dirt-cheap step covers, and set your eyes on something a bit more expensive, but made of higher-quality materials guaranteed to last much longer.

The materials used should also provide additional traction and safety, which should always be your primary concern.

How Many Types of Step Cover for RV Are There?

Step covers are often categorized based on the materials that they are made of. Among the most commonly used types based on materials are the following:

Rubber – The excellent thing about rubber step covers is that they are effective at trapping dirt and dust, preventing them from getting into your RV. Also, rubber step covers are incredibly easy to clean.

Just hose them down, and most of the dirt and grime will come falling off, and it is much faster if you have a power washer. Because rubber is non-porous, rubber is not the ideal environment for mold and mildew.

Plastic/PVC – It is the most affordable step cover material that you will find. It is very lightweight and easy to clean. You just need to hose it down or scrub it using a plastic brush with soap and water to give it a good cleaning.

It also dries fast and does not absorb water, so it is naturally mold and mildew-resistant. With that said, PVC also has a couple of drawbacks that you should take note of. One of these drawbacks is that it tends to melt under intense sunlight. Also, it tends to crack when exposed to freezing weather quickly.

Polyester Olefin Carpet – This type is one of the most common stair covers you will ever see when shopping. This carpet is so popular that it can trap dirt and debris between the fibers. Furthermore, it can absorb moisture, thereby drying off your shoes so you do not track mud all over the RV.

However, it is the absorbency of this material that is its downside. The steps of your RV need to be perforated so that the water absorbed by the carpet has a way to drain away. If water is left to stand in the step cover for too long, it becomes a breeding ground for fungi.

You need to make sure that it gets plenty of sun exposure to keep it dry. Alternatively, if you need to go right away, you should use a blow dryer to hasten the drying process before you fold the steps.

As you can see, each type of step cover has its share of pros and cons. You need to weigh each of them with your particular needs and see which one is the right fit.

How Do the RV Step Cover Work?

RV step covers are commonly used to make the treads a lot more comfortable to walk on. The problem with most RV steps is that they are so hard and rigid that most people feel awkward going up and down.

Moreover, bare RV steps can be quite slippery when wet, so having step covers to provide them with an additional grip will make them even safer.

How to Choose the Right Size?

You need to choose a step cover that can wrap around the tread, but not completely. It should be just enough to allow a couple of spring hooks to hold the cover tightly over the step. The cover must not twist or slide over the step as it might cause people to trip over the steps and get seriously injured.

Regarding the width of the cover, it should be wide enough to cover the steps without interfering with the operation of the hinges. It is necessary so that there will not be any space where dirt and small pieces of debris can get into. It is why it is essential to get accurate measurements of your RV steps before you go shopping for covers.

Do not believe sellers when they say that their products can fit this particular brand of RV steps. Ask for the measurements of the covers and compare them with the measurements that you have.

What is the Best Camper Cover?

The best camper cover is entirely subjective. One person’s idea of the top-rated RV step cover might not be the same as another person. It might even be the complete opposite. You need to consider what your needs are, then make a choice based on what information you have gathered.

For example, where do you usually go on RV trips? Do you typically go to places where there is lots of sand, like the desert or the beach? If so, get a polyester carpet step cover as you will need something to prevent people from tracking sand into your RV.

However, if you like to go camping in the woods and often go trail hiking, getting a rubber cover is better as it can scrape off mud and other debris from the soles of your shoes. This material also lets the muddy water drain efficiently.

You might get lucky to find a product advertised to be the best that also happens to check all the right boxes for you, but then again, you might even end up with something disappointing. Trust your gut. Buy the step cover that you think is best for your particular needs.

How Do You Measure RV Step Covers?

To make sure that you buy the right-sized step cover, measure your existing RV steps first. Measure the width of the steps. Do not measure the end to end width of the tread. Measure the inner width, which is the distance between the extruding bolts inside the step.

The next thing that you need to measure is the depth of the tread. You can take it from the front edge of the step, all the way to the opposite edge. It will give you all the information you will need to buy step covers that will fit your RV steps.

How Do You Make an RV Step Cover?

If you want to make your customized step cover, then rest assured that you can. You just need a bit of the material that you will use as a cover. A grommet punch is also necessary. The grommet punch will prevent the holes from ripping and fraying.

Don’t worry, you can get a grommet punch kit for under $10, and you can find many other projects to use it on. First, measure the width of the steps that you will be installing the covers on. Measure the depth, too.

Cut enough the cover materials that are the same width of the steps, and around 1-3/4 the depth for the wraparound radius. The materials should wrap around the step, but not enough that the ends would meet. There should be a 2-inch or 3-inch gap.

Fold the material crosswise. Make sure that the edges are precisely on top of each other. Now, take the grommet punch and create holes around half an inch from the edge. Four evenly spaced holes should be enough. Open up the material and then punch grommets into each of the eight holes. Now, you have your very own custom-made step cover.

How Do You Install an RV Step Cover?

Unlike most other recreational vehicle accessories available, you do not need to hire anyone else to install the step covers. You do not even need tools, maybe just a pair of needle-nose pliers.

Measure the step cover against the treads. If the cover that you got is too wide, you can just trim off the excess materials at the sides. Once the sheet is tailored to the correct size, drape it over the steps.

Insert the cable tie or one end of the spring hooks into the holes at the front of the cover. Do the same with the other holes at the back. If the spring hook is a bit too tight, you can use needle-nose pliers to help pull and insert the hooks into the grommets. If you are using spring hooks, they will tighten up automatically.

You just need to adjust the position of the cover to straighten it if necessary. If you are using zip ties, tighten the zip ties enough to hold the covers securely. Trim the excess length to make it look clean.

Care and Maintenance

The way to take care of RV step covers will depend on the material that they are made of. If your step covers are made of rubber or PVC, you do not need to remove them from the steps. You can just point a hose at them and give them a good bit of scrubbing using a brush if there are any stubborn dirt clods.

If you have polyester carpet step covers, just vacuum them at least once a week to remove all of the dust and dirt inside the fibers. If you need to give the covers a good cleaning, take them off the steps and throw them into the washing machine using a regular wash cycle.

You can also toss the covers into the dryer. Don’t worry; they will not shrink. Once the step covers are completely dry, you can put them back onto the steps.
